Florida storm response

A record of your roof after a storm.

Backsider Construction can inspect visible roof conditions, preserve project photos, and prepare a construction scope. The property owner handles any insurance claim with the carrier or an appropriately licensed adviser.

Can a Florida roofer file or negotiate an insurance claim?

A roofing contractor is not automatically a public adjuster and should not prepare, file, or negotiate an insurance claim for the property owner. A contractor can inspect the property, document observed construction conditions, explain its own estimate, and perform authorized construction work.

Backsider's rule is simple: we document the roof condition and our proposed construction scope. You decide whether to contact your carrier and discuss coverage, deductibles, and policy terms with the appropriate parties.

This page provides general information, not legal or insurance advice. See the current text of Florida Statute 489.147 and consult qualified advisers for your situation.

What Backsider can document

Observed roof conditions

Visible conditions involving shingles, roof joints, vents, pipes, edges and drainage. Flashing is the material that seals joints and edges.

Location-specific photos

Field photos organized against the property or project record.

Construction scope

The repair or replacement work Backsider proposes based on its inspection and professional judgment.

Estimate details

Materials, work steps, quantities, and other construction details included in Backsider's estimate.

Completed work

Work records and photographs showing progress and completion of the approved repairs or replacement.

Known limitations

Access, safety, weather, concealed conditions, or other limits affecting what could be confirmed.

What the property owner handles

Whether to make a claim

The owner decides whether to contact the insurer and report a loss.

Policy and coverage questions

The insurer or a properly licensed insurance professional addresses policy interpretation and coverage.

Deductible obligations

The property owner is responsible for the applicable deductible. Backsider does not advertise or promise to waive it.

Claim negotiation

Backsider does not act as the owner's public adjuster or negotiate settlement terms on the owner's behalf.

From inspection to approved work

  1. Protect people and property. Address active hazards and emergency conditions first.
  2. Request a roof inspection. Backsider evaluates accessible construction conditions and records what it observes.
  3. Review the construction findings. Understand the affected areas, recommended scope, and inspection limits.
  4. Handle insurance separately. If you choose to contact your carrier, discuss the claim, coverage, deductible, and policy terms with the appropriate insurance parties.
  5. Authorize construction in writing. The repair or replacement contract should clearly state the scope, price, change process, and required Florida notices.

Storm documentation questions

Can Backsider speak with my insurer?

A contractor may discuss or explain its own construction bid within the limits of Florida law. Backsider does not represent the property owner as a public adjuster or negotiate the claim.

Will photos prove that a condition is covered?

No. Photos can document observed conditions, but coverage is determined under the insurance policy by the appropriate insurance parties.

Can a contractor waive my deductible?

Florida law states that the consumer is responsible for an applicable insurance deductible and prohibits fraudulent waiver or rebate practices.

Should I sign a roofing contract before checking coverage?

If proposed work relates to a claim, Florida law requires specific contract language advising the owner to contact the insurer to verify coverage, deductibles, and policy terms before signing.
